Johan discovered his passion for music at the age of 14. He and his brother, Lukan joined a local music school named “Shotabdir Ahoban” for acoustic guitar and drums respectively. The year was 1997 and Johan was exposed to the music world practically for the first time. His progress was rapid and at the end of the year, 1998, he quit from the music school and began to take lesson from the same teacher of the music school. After 4 months he stopped taking lesson and discovered his knack for composing his own music. He began to compose his own tunes with his brother and besides playing guitar he started singing along as well. It is to be noted that Johan has never taken vocal music lesson. He and his brother suddenly became interested in having there own band. Johan began giving guitar lesson to his best friend Sujoy. With Johan composing music, Sujoy writing lyric and simultaneously practicing base guitar and Lukan playing drums the boys were out to show the world there talents. They named themselves the “Subconscious” because according to them, music came from the soul and they believed that a men is more close to their soul at their subconscious state of mind. Meanwhile a family friend of johan’s mother, who happens to be a film director, heard about the mini band of theirs and became keen to listening to them. He found them quite captivating and signed them for his new film “Our Boys”. The film had a scene where the boys to be singing in a concert. The director organized the sound system and a venue and they were to perform live for the scene to be shot. This gave the boys their first exposer to perform as a band. From then on there was no stopping. They began to progressing in an antagonistic way. In 2000 they met Nabil who was a progressing key-boardist. Nabil joined “Subconscious”. A few days later Sherina joined “subconscious” and by then, they became quite established as a local band in Dhaka. They regularly had jamming sessions where they all together practiced the music, the tunes Johan composed from home. Their goal was now to be celebrities in Bangladesh. They wanted to be recognized all through out Bangladesh- media was there next target. After participating a numerous concert they entered the “Benson & Hedges” star search competition in the year 2001. Bands from all over Bangladesh were to be performing in the talent show. They got through the first few steps and made it to the 15th out of the 800 bands that filled up forms and 100 that were selected for the audition. Although they didn’t win the competition, victory was soon going to be theres. The very next year, they participated again and own the best band award, and johan won the best guitarist award. “Benson & Hedges” produced there first album “Matir Deho” through G-Series. The album was a hit. After that they became one of the busiest band in Dhaka. Not only Dhaka, they performed all over Bangladesh- they did concerts in Faridpur, barishal, chittagong, norshindi, commilla and dhamrai. Johan was also offered to play guitar with “orthohin” – a very old and popular band in Bangladesh. Johan played with them as their guest guitarist. G-Series, the leading production company took out their second album that was realized in the month of June. The album was named “Tarar mela”.
