In February 2010, a pivotal life-changing decision was made. A Maryland-based musician, rapper and singer named Kenton Dunson decided to let his passion to be a full-time music artist take priority over his progressing career in finance. This passion stems from an instance 14 years prior when at age 12, Kenton asked for a sequencer upon first hearing the production work of now famous producer Timbaland. Since being inspired, Kenton not only spent hours each day crafting original music but flourished as a musician while performing as a keyboardist and drummer in numerous bands of various genres which broadened his musical experiences and influences. Years later while earning his Business and Economics degree at McDaniel College, Kenton began selling beats over the internet for pocket change which spawned his intense passion to professionally produce music. During this period, Kenton developed new influences from artists such as Kanye West, Radiohead, Citizen Cope and Little Brother.
Upon graduating, Dunson accepted a job at a major financial firm where he spent time earning a position as an investment counselor which finally came to fruition coincidentally at the onset of the 2008 financial meltdown. Dunson was then moonlighting as a musician and producer in the Baltimore/Washington, D.C. area. While producing and writing for others, Dunson felt that his own vocal work, songwriting ideas and lyricism fit best on his original music creations, he then began crafting solo songs which led his eventual transition into a full-time solo artist in early 2010. That winter, Dunson spent weekends in various Baltimore hotel rooms recording his solo debut project, The Kenton Dunson Progressions, a 13-song, self-produced album of soul-tinged hip-hop and r&b which released in June 2010. The album received solid critical-response in very small circles locally and on the internet but Dunson was not satisfied with retaining a reputation as an underground hip-hop/soul artist. By August 2010, experiencing the truths of a generally unsuccessful full-time artist, Dunson decided to embark on a second project entitled Creative Destruction, an unfiltered hip-hop album which illustrates the sacrifice and journey of the ambitious individual and also includes more assertive yet tangible musical undertones and arrangements. The album was released as a free download in November 2010 and continues to grow in reception with the help of live shows, independent radio, DJs and accelerating internet support through avenues such as music bloggers and HypeMachine.com.
As the music continues to spread through a growing base of listeners, Kenton is preparing to strike while the iron is hot with his newest self-produced project which includes several collaborations and his strongest song writing to date. He has counted his initial year of full-time artistry as independent discovery and artist development with his ultimate goal tied to his first day with a sequencer...to produce amazing music.
