Born May 29, 1980 in Los Angeles, CA, Steve and his family relocated to the Twin Cities in 1990. It was there that Goold, age 11, quickly began learning the basic functions of groove from Mark Nash, drummer for Grammy-nominated CCM pop group PFR. As he continued to hone his skills and perfect his craft, Goold set out to cover some serious ground in the Midwest, playing in local churches, garage bands, and receiving the “Best Soloist” award at the LaCrosse Jazz festival with the all-conference Jazz Band he was involved with during high school. In addition, he began teaching private lessons at the age of 16.
After high school, Goold attended Bethel University (1998-2002) while playing local jobbing gigs. It was during this time that his disciplinary emphasis weighed heavily on jazz and gospel. Such an intensive period of study led to extensive training under internationally acclaimed avant-jazz drummer David King (The Bad Plus, Jeff Beck, others) as well as internationally acclaimed rock/pop drummer Michael Bland (Prince, Madonna, Jonny Lang, others).
Immediately after graduating from Bethel, Goold set out on a successful career as a professional drummer, earning credibility while performing live and in-studio throughout the US, South America, Central America, Asia, and Europe. He has steadily averaged 250 gigs per year, including everything from original music and freelance/commercial studio work, to jobbing gigs in jazz clubs, ballrooms, area churches, and pit orchestras.
Steve has performed with a long list of noteworthy musical artists and groups, including Michael Tait, Twin Cities pop/rock veterans The Honeydogs, American Idol’s Jesse Langseth, Minneapolis prog/rock super group The Bill Mike Band, Larnelle Harris, Shai Linne, Halloween Alaska, Desdamona, and many, many others. He has also attained stature as a reputable session drummer, with credits on over 100 recordings. Additionally, Goold joined the music faculties of Bethel University and Northwestern College after graduating from Bethel in 2002, and continues to teach for both organizations. Past students include the drummers for Lorie Line, hip-hop sensation Atmosphere, Rebecca St. James, Mason Jennings, White Light Riot, This World Fair, and many others. Currently Steve is hard at work as drummer and musical director for children’s entertainment trio, Go Fish. He also performs regularly with Grammy-nominated songwriter Joel Hanson (PFR), Emmy-winning vocal quartet The Blenders, Elizabeth Hunnicutt, Jeremy Sanoski, and The Jason Harms Quintet. Significant upcoming work includes a January tour (2012) in Asia performing for Owl City, spring and summer tours with Go Fish, and involvement in the production of Joel Hanson’s 4th full-length album.
