Named after a poor English translation of a Salvador Dali painting, Virgin of the Birds is primarily Jon Rooney occasionally augmented by the talents of various folks for live shows and select recordings. About 2007′s Mixed Choir, songs:illinois noted “If you like the rambling folk weirdness of Felt than you’ll no doubt like this as well.” In 2009, Virgin of the Birds began releasing a series of free, download-only EPs, beginning with Every Rival which Paper Pistol called “subtle and beautiful”. Dear Furies, which Song, By Toad said “exudes confidence and solace”, and Banquet Years, called “their most accomplished work yet” by FensePost, soon followed. 2011 brought the release of Fugitive Works, which, like the other 3 free EPs, was made entirely at home. MIDI was liberally employed.
Founded as an outlet for Rooney’s songs outside of Morning Spy, a now-slumbering indie pop/rock band he formed in San Francisco, CA, Virgin of the Birds treads a line between intimate, lo fi folk and the occasional grandeur of early art rock. Since leaving San Francisco, Virgin of the Birds was briefly based in Austin, TX before settling in Seattle, WA.
